The Woodman Museum will be honoring Dover’s military fallen at the local Pine Hill Cemetery on Memorial Day, which falls on May 27 this year. The event, which begins at 11AM at Pine Hill Cemetery’s GAR monument, will begin with a ceremony to honor Dover’s fallen soldiers. It will include brief remarks, a wreath laying, a ‘taps’ performance, and a Civil War cannon salute. Following the ceremony, an information packet will be distributed detailing six of the many of Dover’s Civil War soldiers who were killed in action and buried in the Pine Hill Cemetery. Visitors are encouraged to visit their gravesites and pay their respects. At noon, trained artillery experts will be conducting a Civil War cannon firing demonstration at the lower Pine Hill Cemetery fields (south of So. Watson Road). The Woodman, a local history museum currently in its 103rd season, is proud to organize this year’s event. The Woodman Museum’s chairman, historian Paul Timmerman, alongside Operations Director Michael Day, have extensively reorganized and reinterpreted the museum’s Civil War collection in the Woodman House. Timmerman, a Civil War enthusiast, also is a member of the 1st NH Light Artillery reenactment group. The Woodman Museum is also currently in the process of restoring a Civil War-era ‘Napoleon’ cannon through community raised donations. Originally donated to the Museum by the Dover GAR Charles Sawyer Post 17, the cannon, carriage, limber and ammunition box including sabots are original Civil War era and a rarity in museum collections. The wood and iron fittings are deteriorating due to age and exposure to the weather. The cannon is currently undergoing restoration with an expected return to the museum on July 27 of this year with an unveiling ceremony.  To learn more about how you can donate to the project, please visit https://www.gofundme.com/adopt-an-artifact-napoleon-cannon or visit woodmanmuseum.org.
