Speaker Series #3: Gross Misbehavior and Wickedness

November 8, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Woodman Museum, 182 Central Avenue
Dover , NH 03042 United States
+ Google Map

Gross Misbehavior and Wickedness: A Notorious Divorce in Early Twentieth-Century America with Connections to New Hampshire Tickets are $5 and admission is free for Woodman Museum members. Nov. 8, 7-9pm. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF TALK The bitter and public court battles waged between Nina and James Walker, from 1909 to 1916, created a sensation throughout the nation, with lurid accounts of their marital troubles fueling widespread gossip. The ordeal of this high-society couple, who wed as much for status as for love, is one of the prime examples of the growing trend of women seeking divorce during the early twentieth century. Many of the issues raised still resonate today. Although the Walker case drew widespread national attention at the time, Jean Elson’s book, Gross Misbehavior and Wickedness, is the first book to recount what happened. The Walkers both came from prominent American families. James Walker’s father, Admiral John Grimes Walker, was a native of New Hampshire and had close Woodman family friends. His children grew up while he was stationed at the Portsmouth Naval Yard, and James attended St. Paul’s in Concord. James and Nina Walker returned to the area when James, a Navy lieutenant, was also stationed in Portsmouth. They sent their children to the local public schools. Nina Walker filed for divorce soon after the family left Portsmouth, and she declared that their stay here “proved to be the calm before the storm.” The Walker story has several twists and a fascinating cast of characters. Book reviews have indicated “Gross Misbehavior and Wickedness chronicles the Walkers' seven-year divorce battle with meticulous research and vivid narration,” that it “reads like a contemporary detective novel,” and is “a moving and captivating book.” JEAN ELSON’S BIO Jean Elson is Senior Lecturer Emerita in the Department of Sociology at the University of New Hampshire. During her tenure at UNH, Dr. Elson taught classes and lectured on the topics of gender, family, women’s health and illness, and sexual behavior.  She received several teaching awards, including the “Vagina Warrior Award” from the V-Day Committee and the “Pink Triangle Award” from the LGBTQ Community. Jean served as an appointed member of the UNH President’s Commission on the Status of Women. Jean Elson holds a PhD in Sociology and a Master’s in Sociology and Women’s Studies from Brandeis University, where she received academic awards and fellowships, including the Graduate Grant Prize for Research in Women’s Studies. She was awarded the Elizabeth Stanton Michaels Fellowship by the National American Association of University Women. Jean Elson’s previous book, “Am I Still a Woman?” Hysterectomy and Gender Identity, received enthusiastic reviews from both the popular and academic press. She is also author of a chapter in Our Bodies Ourselves: Menopause. Jean has written articles and been interviewed for a variety of journals, newspapers, and magazines and has appeared on several radio and television programs. Jean has two grown children, Dave and Jessy, both married, and a grandson, Max. She and her husband Tom have traveled extensively in Europe, Southeast Asia, and Latin America.

Woodman Speaker Series: Patricia Violette, “Diplomacy in Early New England”

February 20 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Woodman Museum, 182 Central Avenue
Dover , NH 03042 United States
+ Google Map

Woodman Museum Speaker Series Kicks in 2019 with Colonial-Native Treaties Lecture The Woodman Museum announces its first Speaker Series event of 2019, “Diplomacy in Early New England: Treaty Conferences as a Window on Native and Non-Native Cultures,” to be held on February 20 at 7:00 PM. The event kicks off the 2019 Speaker Series to be hosted at the Woodman Museum, featuring talks on period Seacoast furniture,  slavery and capitalism in America, John Wilkes Booth, oceanography, New Hampshire’s participation in the Revolutionary War, and other historical and special topics. Guest speaker Patricia Violette will deliver a talk on relations between colonists and indigenous tribes in the mid-18th century, exploring the ramifications of treaties forged between native groups in New England and colonial governments. Violette will recount the actions of Royal Governor William Shirley, who served as Captain-General (Commander-in-Chief) of Massachusetts forces during two wars: King George's War, 1744 to 1748, and the French and Indian War, 1754 to 1763. Though most of the fighting in both wars took place in Europe, each also resulted in Massachusetts declaring war on the Indian tribes on its Eastern frontier in Maine.  European treaties ended the fighting on the continent, but Massachusetts also signed separate treaties with the Indians, either to end the hostilities or to gain Indian permission for an expansion of Massachusetts military presence in the Kennebec River valley. Using the transcripts of three treaty conferences conducted by Shirley, Patricia Violette, Executive Director of Albacore Park Museum and Visitor Center in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, will compare key English and Indian cultural concepts, examine selected exchanges in the transcripts for cultural clues, and discuss why cultural differences made it so hard for Natives and non-Natives to achieve lasting peace. Ms. Patricia Violette has more than twenty years of experience in nonprofit management and museum leadership, including Old Fort Western in Augusta, Maine; the Shirley-Eustis Historic House in Boston, Massachusetts, Mt. Kearsarge Indian Museum in Warner, New Hampshire and currently she is with the Portsmouth Submarine Memorial Association as their Executive Director.  Ms. Violette received an AS in Business and a BS in History from the University of Southern Maine.  She also has an MS in Education from Thomas College in Waterville, Maine. March 2019

Woodman Speaker Series: General John Stark

March 27 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every day that begins at 10:00 am, repeating until March 28, 2019

Woodman Museum, 182 Central Avenue
Dover , NH 03042 United States
+ Google Map

The Woodman Museum is excited to announce its March Woodman Speaker Series event, which will explore the extraordinary life of New Hampshire native General John Stark and his integral connection to American independence. The talk will take place on March 27 at 7pm at the museum’s Woodman House (182 Central Avenue, Dover, NH 03820). A follow-up event will be held the following day on March 28 at 10am. The event is free to members and $5 for non-members. John Stark (August 28, 1728 – May 8, 1822) was a New Hampshire native, born in Londonderry, who served as an officer in the British Army during the French and Indian war and a major general in the Continental Army during the American Revolution. He became widely known as the "Hero of Bennington" for his exemplary service at the Battle of Bennington in 1777. Few men contributed as much to the American victory in the Revolutionary War but have been as little recognized as a New Hampshire farmer and lumberman John Stark. But although his life is not well known, a few words he wrote live on as the New Hampshire state motto: “Live Free or Die.” He served as a captain of rangers with Robert Rogers in the French and Indian War, and as a colonel and general in the Revolution at Bunker Hill, Trenton, Princeton, Westchester, Springfield, Saratoga, Ticonderoga and West Point. But his greatest achievement was at Hoosick, N.Y., in what became known as the Battle of Bennington. The Battle of Saratoga and the surrender of Burgoyne on 17 October 1777 was the turning point of the American Revolution, but the Battle of Bennington on 16 August set the stage. At Bennington John Stark commanded a force of militia and Green Mountain Boys, everyday men from Vermont and New Hampshire facing professional European soldiers. In a daring and complicated attack, Stark routed an entrenched enemy and almost entirely destroyed it. It was the beginning of the end of the British invasion from Canada until then a juggernaut that could not be stopped. Stark was the quintessential citizen soldier proud, resourceful, independent. He was unschooled and rough around the edges, a New Hampshire frontiersman. Woodman Museum Chairman and docent Paul Timmerman, a resident of Dover, will discuss the life and times of John Stark and his vital contributions to the war effort during the American Revolution. Timmerman, who has recently volunteered to serve as chairman, is also an avid historian and Civil War reenactor with the 1st NH Light Artillery group. He has also spearheaded a recent endeavor to restore the Woodman Museum’s rare ‘Napoleon’ Civil War cannon, one of few in in existence in a near-complete state. To learn more about the Adopt-an-Artifact campaign for the Napoleon cannon, please visit https://woodmanmuseum.org/adopt-woodman-artifact/.

Woodman Speaker Series: Aaron Chin on the Economics of Slavery

April 17 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Woodman Museum, 182 Central Avenue
Dover , NH 03042 United States
+ Google Map

Woodman Speaker Series Presents “Cotton Is King”: Capitalism, Slavery, and the Economic Ties between North and South The Woodman Speaker Series returns this April with a lecture by Aaron Chin, in which he explores forms of capitalism in the North and South leading up to the Civil War--and the North's unspoken exploitation of the system of chattel slavery. Hosted at the Woodman House, the lecture will take place on Wednesday, April 17 at 7pm. Members enjoy free admission and the non-member rate is $5. When one thinks of slavery before the Civil War, the antebellum South often comes to mind. While the North was busy building factories and creating a capitalist society, the South, with its sprawling plantations and agrarian focus, seemed a far cry from its Northern counterpart. For many years, historians asserted that Southern slavery could not possibly be the same thing as Northern capitalism. This has changed. In recent years, historians have come to emphasize the capitalistic nature of slavery, asserting that the South was, in fact, every bit as committed to capitalism as the North. Further, the North profited economically from the expansion of Southern slavery. New England factory workers spun slave-grown cotton into clothing as Northern merchants extended credit to their Southern business partners. The industrialization of the Northeast relied upon the raw materials produced by the enslaved in the South. This talk will review how historians have come to see antebellum slavery as capitalism and how economically connected the North – particularly New England – was to it. Aaron Chin is a PhD student in History at the University of New Hampshire. Originally from Tennessee, he graduated from Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee with a Bachelor of Arts in History with a double major in Classical and Medieval Humanities. After graduating with a master’s degree in History from the University of New Hampshire, he returned to pursue a PhD in American History. Aaron studies the history of capitalism during the nineteenth century in the United States. For more information, please follow the event on our Facebook event page, located here. Woodman Speaker Series: Author E. Abel on “J.W. Booth and the Women who Loved Him”

May 29 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Woodman Museum, 182 Central Avenue
Dover , NH 03042 United States
+ Google Map

The Woodman Museum is to welcome author Ernest L. Abel for the continuation of its monthly Speaker Series, in which he will discuss his book John Wilkes Booth and the Women Who Loved Him, on May 29 at 7pm. The book, released in 2018, recounts the history of the various and sometimes sordid romances of the quintessential American villain and assassin John Wilkes Booth. The author states that the narrative, rather than simply recounting Booth’s life, is about “the women whose lives took wild turns before and after Lincoln’s assassination—women whom have been condemned to the footnotes of history.” It is available for sale at the Woodman Museum’s giftshop. The Woodman Museum’s connection to John Wilkes Booth has intrigued guests since its opening in 1916. The Museum campus, which includes the Woodman House (1818), the William Damm Garrison (1675), and the Keefe House (1825), also is home to the Hale House (1813). Senator John Parker Hale, the first openly abolitionist politician elected to Congress, was a native of Dover, NH and resided with his family on what is now Central Ave in the home that now belongs to the Museum. When the then senator lived in Washington, D.C., his daughter, Lucy Hale, entered into an interesting courtship with the young actor and southern sympathizer John Wilkes Booth. Booth, who came from a family of actors, would win the heart of the senator’s daughter, shortly before he committed his heinous assassination of President Lincoln. Author Ernest Lawrence Abel is a distinguished faculty professor and an emeritus professor at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. He is a member of the Michigan Civil War Round Table, the Surratt Society, and the National Museum of Civil War Medicine. Able is also the author of more than forty scholarly and trade books and more than two hundred peer-reviewed articles and trade magazine articles. The event, which is to be held at the Woodman House (182 Central Ave., Dover, NH 03820) is free to members and $5 for non-members.

Woodman Speaker Series Presents a Tale of Scandalous 19th Century Divorce DOVER, NH—The Woodman Museum’s monthly speaker series continues on June 19, 2019 at 7pm with author Jean Elson, Senior Lecturer Emerita in the Department of Sociology at the University of New Hampshire, who will discuss her book Gross Behavior and Wickedness. The bitter and public court battles waged between Nina and James Walker, from 1909 to 1916, created a sensation throughout the nation, with lurid accounts of their marital troubles fueling widespread gossip. Book reviews have indicated “Gross Misbehavior and Wickedness chronicles the Walkers' seven-year divorce battle with meticulous research and vivid narration,” that it “reads like a contemporary detective novel,” and is “a moving and captivating book.” The talk is $5 for non-members and free to active Woodman Museum members. Join us at The Woodman for a lecture by Dr. Kimberly Alexander, Lecturer at the UNH Department of History: The 18th century shoemaking tradition in New Hampshire was rich, varied and widespread. From making shoes or parts of shoes at home, to the significance of the ubiquitous 10 footer (a small vernacular structure adaptable for many purposes) and itinerancy, Dr. Kimberly Alexander will explore the multiple meanings of the makers and the wearers, uncovering little known stories along the way. Dr. Kimberly Alexander is on the faculty of the History Department at the University of New Hampshire. She has held curatorial positions at several New England Museums, including the MIT Museum, the Peabody Essex Museum and Strawbery Banke.  Her most recent book, entitled Treasures Afoot: Shoe Stories from the Georgian Era, traces the history of early Anglo-American footwear from the 1740s through the 1790s . Dr. Alexander’s forthcoming book, Fashioning the New England Family, will be available fall, 2019. She was Guest Curator of “Fashioning the New England Family,” at the Massachusetts Historical Society.   Treasures Afoot: Shoe Stories from the Georgian Era https://pwb02mw.press.jhu.edu/title/treasures-afoot   Fashioning the New England Family https://www.upress.virginia.edu/title/5368
